Give shelter to a cold, neglected dog

Please help dogs like Pinky

Dear Emily,

Every day, my job brings me face to face with the shockingly cruel things that people do to animals. So I can't tell you how much joy I get when I deliver a sturdy, weatherproof doghouse to a dog who is relegated to a desperately lonely life outside, trapped at the end of a heavy chain or confined for life to a small, barren pen. It is remarkable how that tail wags and that bounce comes back when these dear souls find that they have been given a sturdy doghouse of their own—a place to get out of the wet and cold and curl up in straw bedding. That gift changes a dog's life and lifts his or her spirits.

For lonely dogs like Pinky who are chained outside in thunderstorms and freezing temperatures, your "Angel for Animals" sponsorship can provide the shelter that they so desperately need. Be An "Angel" TodayWith winter blowing in across the country, I hope you will join PETA in bringing shelter to neglected dogs who are forced to live outdoors. As an "Angel for Animals sponsor," you can give a lonely dog warmth during this long, cold season.

Throughout the year, PETA fieldworkers respond to local calls about dogs who are treated like cheap burglar alarms, not like living beings. Their owners never allow them inside, no matter how harsh the weather. We find them suffering from frostbite in the cold months and from heat distress in the hot months. Often, we'll find dogs curled up into the tightest ball—trying vainly to hide from the wind and sleet—or crouching behind a garbage can, freezing cold and shaking uncontrollably.

It was on one of these cold, rainy days that we found Pinky. A small brown dog with a white stripe down her nose, Pinky was tied with rope to a stack of bricks. Her only "shelter" was a single piece of plywood. We gave Pinky a sturdy new doghouse and stuffed it full of straw to help her through that night and give her comfort on many, many more cold winter nights to come. We also gave her a few precious minutes of love and attention—a few minutes of play—which all "backyard" dogs so desperately crave.

Thanks to our caring "Angel for Animals" sponsors , PETA has built and delivered more than 4,000 top-quality doghouses to some of the most impoverished areas in Virginia and North Carolina. This means that because of this lifesaving PETA program, more than 4,000 animals now have shelter and a way to escape the freezing cold and blistering heat.

But right now, countless dogs just like Pinky are facing a lonely, cold winter outside without vital protection from the elements. With your help as an "Angel for Animals" doghouse sponsor, we can give these animals shelter and stop some of the terrible suffering that they would otherwise endure.

And our commitment to these dogs doesn't end once we've delivered their doghouses. For example, a few weeks after finding Pinky, we returned with our mobile veterinary clinic to spay her, which will prevent more puppies from being born and enduring a lonely life like Pinky's. We do all that we can to provide dogs like Pinky with basic necessities: medicine, flea and tick prevention, a good meal, clean water, a toy, and a tangle-free running line to replace the heavy tractor-trailer chains that drag them down. And we give them scratches behind the ears and love—a luxury few of them have ever experienced before.

Animal suffering doesn't take a day off, and neither do we here at PETA. I am enormously proud of my fellow fieldworkers, who are so dedicated to improving the lives of dogs like Pinky who have known little to no human kindness. But all the work we do begins with the compassion and generosity of supporters like you.

Will you help a neglected dog stuck outside in the cold this winter by becoming an "Angel for Animals" doghouse sponsor today?

With gratitude,
Daphna Nachminovitch
Daphna Nachminovitch
Vice President, Cruelty Investigations Department

P.S. One simple act of kindness from you can help provide a vulnerable animal with immediate relief from the cold and protect him or her from harsh winter conditions for many years to come. Won't you please be an "Angel for Animals" doghouse sponsor this year? A gift of any size will really help these animals.

Join CARE and Clinton to end rape in Congo

Dear Friend:

Did you know that more than 200,000 women and girls have been raped in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during the past 12 years? I was shocked and saddened to learn that astonishing statistic. The good news is that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is taking a stand against this type of violence and making its prevention and assistance to survivors a priority in U.S. foreign policy.

But there is still much work to be done. That's why I joined with CARE to e-mail Secretary Clinton and asked her to demonstrate continued leadership in pushing for stronger protections to prevent women and girls around the world from becoming victims of sexual violence.

We need to urge Secretary Clinton to remain steadfast in ensuring U.S. diplomatic attention and foreign assistance resources are focused on putting an end to the suffering of women and girls in conflict-affected places like the DRC. Please join me in sending a message Secretary Clinton today. To take action on this issue, click on the link below:

Help Out Wildlife!

Right now, your U.S. senators are writing the long-awaited climate and clean energy bill. With up to 30% of plant and wildlife species at risk for extinction if we don't act now to confront global warming, it's clear that wildlife need our voice in Washington. Please join me in asking Congress to set aside funding in the climate and clean energy bill to help protect our nation's wildlife and natural resources from the impacts of global warming.

Hi,

It's shocking. In the slaughterhouses of McDonald's Canadian chicken suppliers, birds are hung upside-down in metal shackles, often resulting in broken bones, extreme bruising and hemorrhaging.

There is a more humane method of chicken slaughter available to McDonald's suppliers called controlled-atmosphere killing, or CAK, and it would cost the corporation nothing to demand that its suppliers use it. CAK would eliminate the worst abuses currently suffered by chickens killed for McDonald's.

I've already signed a petition on Care2 to demand that McDonald's Corporation phase in the exclusive use of chickens killed by CAK by requiring that its suppliers switch to this method. Please join me in this fight by sending your own petition letter.

Together we can make sure that the birds killed by McDonald's suppliers will no longer suffer broken limbs, abuse by workers, having their throats cut while they are still conscious or being scalded to death in defeathering tanks.

Please sign the petition today! Thank you.

What is equal opportunity?

Did you know that in 29 states, it's perfectly legal to fire someone for being gay? Or that in 38 states it's legal to fire someone for being transgender?

I found it pretty hard to believe. In an already difficult economy, LGBT people in most of this country also have to worry about losing their jobs just for being who they are. The Senate has just introduced legislation, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would make this kind of discrimination illegal once and for all. I hope you'll take a minute and send a message to your Senators encouraging them to co-sponsor ENDA. It's easy. To take action, go to:

DOMA Survey

Hi,

In the past year alone, tens of thousands of loving same-sex couples have entered into marriage. And with new laws soon to take effect in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont, thousands more will surely join them.

But the federal government still refuses to recognize a single one. Why? Because of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) enacted in 1996. This discriminatory and hurtful law prevents millions of Americans from fully joining the institution of marriage – even if they are legally married.

Washington needs to know why DOMA must end. I just took this quick survey to show Congress and President Obama how DOMA affects me and those I care about. The responses are being delivered directly to our lawmakers. I hope you'll join me before the survey closes:
